Road access may be closed during the wet season (usually October to April). Dating has shown that the meteorite crashed to Earth around 300,000 years ago. It would have weighed more than 50,000 tonnes and is thought to have been travelling at 15 kilometres a second, a speed that would have taken it across Australia in five minutes. The Wolfe Creek meteorite crater was only discovered by Europeans during an aerial survey in 1947. However, it has long been known to Aboriginal people, who called it Kandimalal, and tell of two rainbow snakes who formed the nearby Sturt and Wolfe Creeks as they crossed the desert. The crater is believed to be the place where one snake emerged from the ground.

This amazing meteorite crater is one of the world's largest craters. The crater is extraordinary; it's 875 meters (3000 feet) across. Millions of years ago, the meteorite blasted an enormous hole in … Full review by 619jeffry

we um’d and ah’d about whether we were going to attempt the drive to the crater in a 2WD. Majority of what we had seen online had said the road was too rough and that it was recommended as 4WD only. … Full review by livjacobsonn

Hi. The distance to the Crater along the Tanami from the main road was about 125ks. The road when we traveled in May was a hard surface dirt road and the speed we sat on was around 70 KPH. We could have gone faster but best so keep it down as Pot holes covered in soft dust can appear quickly. About 12ks from the Crater we turned off the Tanimi and after opening and closing about 3 gates we arrived. The flies were bad and I mean BAD so a fly net is recommended. I used repentant (Bushmans) and was no good whats so ever. The camp site there is good and plenty of room. They have a drop toilet also. Last thing is the Stars at night. Spectacular.
We are travelling the Tanami Road can we camp at Wolf Creek

Hi Rhonda, Wolfe Creek Crater has a well laid out camping area with large individual sites, drop toilets, and only a reasonably short walk to the crater. We loved it there and it had one of the best sunsets of our trip. It is a free camp, but you are not allowed fires. If you mean to camp where Wolfe Creek 'crosses' the road, we didn't notice any place to camp, and I would believe you would be very exposed.
Would I be correct that I cannot take my two small dogs with me to the crater?

G'day Cate, I think mccorquin has answered your question really well, and to add to it, I checked my photos of our trip and I have a shot of the Parks sign as you enter the Crater, and the only exclusion on it are that fires are banned, no mention of dogs. Hope this helps.
