SHARPSBURG — As visitors looked on from behind a black chainlink fence last week, workers continued to piece back together one of the most iconic stone-arch bridges in the country.
It served a key role in the 1862 Battle of Antietam when a small number of Confederates defending the critical crossing held off Union forces commanded by Maj. Gen. Ambrose Burnside for several hours.
Opened in 1836, the bridge played a key role in the Battle of Antietam, fought on Sept. 17, 1862, and known as the bloodiest single-day of battle in American history with 23,110 casualties.
