Day one of qualifying for the 109th Running of the Indianapolis 500 is officially in the books. Thirty drivers secured spots on the starting grid for Indianapolis 500 on Saturday. Eighteen of the race’s 33 available spots were finalized.

INDIANAPOLIS -- Robert Shwartzman is the third rookie to win the pole at the Indianapolis 500, the first since Teo Fabi in 1983. Shwartzman posted an average speed of 232.790 mph in the Fast 6 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Sunday to beat out Felix Rosenqvist, Pato O'Ward, Takuma Sato, Alex Palou and Scott Dixon.

Robert Shwartzman, a 25-year-old with dual nationality in Israel and Russia, became the first Indy 500 rookie to qualify on the pole since Teo Fabi in 1983. Shwartzman drives for Prema Racing, an Italian team which races in the Formula 2 series in Europe and made its IndyCar debut this season.
