The reaction times vary. Different species have different sensitivities. Birds may be first – they may fly or move around. And smaller mammals may respond next – changing direction or remaining still.

The moment doesn’t look like anything at first. An animal is present in its environment, moving or still, doing whatever it was doing before you noticed it. Nothing about the scene reads as urgent.
