The Wisconsin Supreme Court ruling doesn't prevent additional court challenges or prohibit lawmakers from passing an abortion ban in the future.

Democrats cheered the ruling as an affirmation that abortion is legal in Wisconsin, while Republicans argue the court overstepped its authority.

The ruling came as no surprise given that liberal justices control the court. One of them went so far as promising to uphold abortion rights during her campaign two years ago.
