Corona del Mar’s girls basketball team provided another twist Wednesday to an already dramatic Sunset League race. The Sea Kings rallied from an early nine-point deficit to beat first-place Los Alamitos 35-29 in a low-scoring game that further compressed the standings.

The Griffins earned a 2-0 win at Newport Harbor High on Tuesday night, despite plenty of chances for the host Sailors in the second half.

Vivi Zacarias scores both goals for Los Alamitos, which earns the No. 1 seed and first-round bye in the league’s inaugural end-of-regular-season tournament.

Newport Harbor improves to 5-0 in league, with all of the wins by shutout, and starts to look ahead to next week’s showdown with Los Alamitos.

The Santa Maria girls soccer team maintained a clean slate in the Sunset League, winning 2-0 at Cabrillo Tuesday.
