Musican-actor Cynthia Erivo talks to Deadline about the importance of playing Elphana and her Oscar nominations

Carnegie Mellon University School of Drama alumnus Stephen Schwartz has earned his ninth Academy Award nomination, this time for the original score of the box office smash “Wicked,” based on the musical written by Schwartz and Winnie Holzman.

In just one short week since “Wicked” became available to watch (and singalong with) at home, the digital edition of the smash-hit musical (the highest-grossing Broadway adaptation in global box office history!

Among the categories in which “Wicked” was nominated is the top prize of Best Picture. Also Oscar-nominated are both of the film’s stars, Tony Award winner Cynthia Erivo in the category of Actress in a Leading Role for her turn as Elphaba and Broadway alum Ariana Grande as Actress in a Supporting Role for her performance as Glinda.

Erivo's Oscar nomination comes as part of a string of successes for 'Wicked', the musical fantasy film directed by Jon M Chu. The film has received 10 nominations, including one for Best Picture, which was announced by producer Marc Platt.

To put that into perspective, “Emilia Pérez,” a movie with a 21% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes and over 5,000 reviews, has the same number of Academy Award nominations as “Oppenheimer” (2023), the highest-grossing Best Picture winner in the past two decades.

Wicked, led by Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, hopes its 10 Oscar nominations fuel ticket sales in the US as it chases Frozen 2’s $477M domestic record, with $466.2M already banked.

Then, in December of that year, Chu revealed (to Variety, among other outlets) that the second part of the epic film will actually be called "Wicked: For Good," taking its title from an earnest duet sung by Elphaba Thropp (Cynthia Erivo) and her best friend turned political enemy Glinda the Good Witch (Ariana Grande-Butera) in the show's second act.

Holly's transformation into Glinda the Good Witch left viewers spellbound, but not everyone was enchanted by her daring pink ensemble.
