Tony Award-winning actress Joan Plowright died on Jan. 16 at Denville Hall, a retirement home for actors in southern England. Plowright was surrounded by loved ones at the time of her death.

Award-winning British actress Joan Plowright has died, aged 95. Her family said in a statement on Friday that she died the previous day in the presence of her loved ones at Denville Hall, a retirement home for artists in southern England. She was conferred the title of Dame by Queen Elizabeth II in 2004.

DAME Joan Plowright was married to one of the most renowned actors of all time — Lawrence Olivier. Joan sadly passed away surrounded by her family on January 16, 2025. A family statement said:

The world of entertainment is in mourning today following the loss of award-winning British actress Dame Joan Plowright, who sadly passed away at the age of 95.

Plowright was part of an era of British acting that has included the likes of Judi Dench, Maggie Smith and Vanessa Redgrave. One of Plowright’s’ most recent projects was the documentary Tea with the Dames where alongside Smith and Dench she looked back on her career and joked that Dench had taken all the best roles.
