A day after Donald Trump's inauguration as US president, the mood was jubilant at a small Berlin campaign event of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, despite the biting winter cold.

Germany will hold a snap national election on Feb. 23 following the collapse of Chancellor Olaf Scholz's three-way coalition.

Saturday's protests took place while AfD opened its election campaign in the central city of Halle, where party leader Alice Weidel, AfD’s candidate for chancellor, spoke to about 4,500 people.
