Heavy storms ripped through the region Monday, toppling trees and power lines and leaving thousands without electricity as crews work through Tuesday morning to restore service.

Winston-Salem has awarded a $721,000 contract to clear almost 50 acres of trees from along the fairways at Winston Lake Golf Course, in a bid to make the course more attractive to more players.
