Peter F. Flaherty, 80, a former mayor of Pittsburgh and deputy U.S. attorney general under President Carter, died Monday of colon cancer at his home in Mount Lebanon, Pa.

MOUNT LEBANON, Pa., April 21 (UPI) -- Former Pittsburgh Mayor Peter Flaherty died this week at the age of 80. The New York Times reports that family members say the cause of death was cancer.
He was the son of former County Commissioner and Judge Jim Flaherty as well as the nephew of former Pittsburgh Mayor Pete Flaherty. He was 59-years-old. More from CBS News.

Flaherty's late brother Pete was Mayor of Pittsburgh and his son Mark served as Allegheny County Controller. Flaherty graduated cum laude from Washington & Jefferson College in 1953.
