An evacuation alert was mistakenly sent to nearly 10 million residents of the Los Angeles area, California, on Thursday afternoon. The message, which was accompanied by a loud buzzing sound, warned of an evacuation due to wildfires. However, it was meant only for those residing near the Kenneth Fire in Calabasas, Agoura Hills and West Hills.

Officials in Los Angeles County said a technical error was to blame for the entire county – nearly 10 million residents – accidentally receiving an emergency evacuation alert Thursday night amid raging wind-swept wildfires.

LA wildfires, including massive Palisades and Eaton fires, continue to devastate the region with zero containment. Damage could total $50 billion.

Nearly 2,000 homes, businesses, and other structures have been destroyed in the Eaton and Palisades fires, and the number is expected to increase. The five deaths recorded so far were from the Eaton Fire.
