No fewer than 36 Wii U games are poised to make history once Nintendo finally releases its much-anticipated successor to the Switch.

Nintendo hasn’t announced its Switch successor yet, but we do know one thing for sure: it will be able to play current Switch games and have carryover for your Nintendo Switch Online services and account. The news was announced during Nintendo’s midyear policy briefing, with further information promised “at a later date.”

"At today's Corporate Management Policy Briefing, we announced that Nintendo Switch software will also be playable on the successor to Nintendo Switch," Nintendo posted in a social media update attributed to company president Shintaro Furukawa. "Nintendo Switch Online will be available on the successor to Nintendo Switch as well."

Nintendo has confirmed that the upcoming successor to the Switch will be backwards compatible with the original console, which is great news for existing owners

The last time Nintendo hosted a direct focused more on first-party games was in June. It used the Direct to highlight the Nintendo Switch games coming in the second half of 2024,

Nintendo is still planning to announce the Switch 2 by the end of March 2025. This strategic timing aligns with the company’s historical pattern of major console releases during spring seasons. The long-awaited console has been rumored to release at some point next year,
