Southern Tier residents are encouraged to brave the cold to protect the nation’s blood supply this January and February. The American Red Cross stated that hundreds of blood drives across the country were canceled in January 2025 due to severe winter weather and wildfires.

Blood donation centers say they urgently need donations after the winter storm. Planned blood drives in Georgia, Alabama, and Louisiana were cancelled because of the Arctic blast. According to LifeSouth Community Blood Centers, the storm caused hundreds of blood donations to be lost.
