Two people are dead in Morgan County, Tenn., after a tornado swept through the area on Thursday, Feb. 6. Here's what we know so far.

The year’s first deadly US tornado struck after dark Thursday, killing two people in a small East Tennessee community as the first of five back-to-back, jet stream-driven winter storms pummeled the eastern United States.

A possible tornado in East Tennessee killed two and injured three others on Thursday. This could also be the first tornado of the 2025 season.

Officials in eastern Tennessee say two people were killed when severe storms with two tornadoes moved through the region.

The tornadoes, which also injured three people and caused widespread damage, reached wind speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour.

On Thursday, part of Morgan County was hit by an EF2 tornado, although it is not the first one the county has seen. Just last year, the town of Sunbright was hit by a EF1 tornado, and in 2002, 7 people were killed after an EF3 tornado touched down in the Mossy Grove area.

Three other people were injured as storms moved through the eastern part of the state Thursday, officials said.
