India's benchmark indexes logged their worst day in around five months on Friday, with Nifty 50 posting its longest monthly losing streak since 1996 on pessimism over domestic market conditions.

Extending losses to the eighth straight day, Nifty dropped 420.35 points or 1.86 per cent to 22,124.70. Sensex and Nifty 50 are down six per cent for the month.

The trends on Gift Nifty also indicate a gap-down start for the Indian benchmark index. The Gift Nifty was trading around 22,542 level, a discount of nearly 141 points from the Nifty futures’ previous close.

Sensex and Nifty crashed nearly 1.50 per cent each on Friday (February 28). While Sensex lost 11 points to trade at 73551 around noon, Nifty was down more than 300 points to trade below 22300. The Nifty Modcap 100 and Smallap 100 crashed more than 3 per cent each.

The Indian market has faced a steep decline due to foreign capital outflows, weak earnings, and economic slowdown, with Nifty 50 experiencing its longest losing streak since 1996. However, signs of economic recovery may attract fresh investments from foreign institutional investors.
