Zircon, zirconium orthosilicate, is found in most igneous rocks and some metamorphic rocks as small crystals or grains, mostly widely distributed and rarely more than 1% of the total mass of the rock. It is also found as alluvial grains in some sedimentary rocks due to its high hardness.
Zircon is tetragonal, space group l4t/amd, with four ZrSiOn per unit cell. The structure has three atoms in the asymmetric unit, withZr at(0,3/4,1/8), Si at (0,3/4,5/8), and O at (0,y,2).
