How to acquire and keep an edge on your flint stones.
Sep 16, 2018 · From an earlier post about flint-knapping, should be relevant here as well, depending on how big your flint is. Smaller flint requires a smaller than "goose-egg" stone. I prefer a heavier striker and can often resharpen a flint using the top of striker as a knapping tool. I'll try to help what I can. I'm sure there are others here more experienced.

May 16, 2012 · At the last show I went to I found a dealer with some rather low end chert marked "Ohio Flint" in an old plastic bin under the table. I got two pieces a little bigger than baseballs for $2. The stuff is fine for fire kits but mot the best for knapping.

Oct 28, 2011 · Flint is very rare, i have to go digging in old tree holes and quarries to even find one tiny piece. But if you find a good piece of quarts or any other rock with a decent angle on the sides then it can be used to throw sparks from steel.

Sep 24, 2008 · You need to make sure your flint is sharp as well, a dull flint won't cut on the frizzen. Get the black / grey english flints someone mentioned, they are the best. Most commercial touch holes are too small in my opinion, I drill mine out to 7/32. Mine were both built and I did'nt use a touch hole linner, just drilled the hole.

Sep 29, 2016 · Flint and steel sparks are nowhere near as hot as those coming off a ferro rod. There are only a few materials that will light with flint and steel without being charred. I don't know if drier lint is one of them (I don't think so), but in general, if you want your sparks to land; they have to drop onto something that has already been charred.
