"You can see it from here!" While visiting the small town of Fortune, Jonny hopped a ferry over to...France?! "It just blew my mind that you could be in Newfoundland and leave, and a couple hours later I was literally sitting there sipping espresso, eating croissants at a French cafe." | Still Standing

Fishing boat runs aground off Fortune, as huge swell forces vessel to wait for coast guard

Here is a short compilation of Fishing Customs/Superstitions that I recorded in Branch and Point Lance in Newfoundland in 2019 and in June/July just gone. The clip starts with Willie Careen chatting about have a small bottle of holy water tied to the stem of the boat, a tradition I’ve seen here in Wexford and I’m sure in other counties too. He also makes reference to a cross that was painted on the boats for protection while ends with the superstition of not turning the boat against the sun. Wil

Ice Fishing Contraption, Branch, Newfoundland Here’s a great contraption for fishing that I noticed on the page of a friend (Jackie Nash) from Branch in Newfoundland about an hour ago. It was made by Kenneth Nash and himself and his wife Jackie were fishing earlier today on a pond near them. Very clever little thing and it works too by the looks of it. Watch this 👇👇👇 Newfoundland/Ireland - St. Stephen’s Day Traditions Here’s 1 minute of video footage filmed on mobile phones today in Wexford (Ireland) and Riverhead (Newfoundland) which captures perfectly the Wren Boy tradition of house calling. The video from Newfoundland was sent to me just now by Gloria White of Wren Boys (and Girls) calling to her door looking for treats today. While the second video is of the exact same tradition from Curragraigue, Co. Wexford doing the same thing. Loads

Hunting the Wren, Newfoundland The wren tradition was brought to Newfoundland too from Ireland and I just got this little video of Sophie, Ben and Taylor from Riverhead, St. Mary’s Bay, Newfoundland calling to their neighbours. The little verse is the same and they bring a little tree with them in the same way we brought a piece of furze with us. Great to see and thanks to Gloria White for the video. Words and Sayings used on the Cape Shore in Newfoundland I just did a backup from my Newfoundland trip and I’m just shy of 100GB of video - which in real money translates as hours and hours and hours of interviews. Here is just 2 mins of this which was recorded on the hop in the car with Robert McGrath the week before last. In the short clip he highlights some great words still used all around Ireland including spraoi, tear, craw, bresney (bresna/bundle of sticks), sleveen (sly/sneaky person), g

Here’s a little video sent to me by Gloria White over in Riverhead, St. Mary’s Bay, Newfoundland. The south east Irish that settled there brought over the wren boy tradition and still go out on St. Stephen’s Day with a little tree and toy bird. Great to see this going on still. Thank Gloria and Taylor, Ben and Sophie! Text: Michael Fortune Video: Gloria White | folklore.ie

If you want to learn more about Newfoundland and its shared Irish folklore, customs and beliefs - these are probably the best source accounts you will find out there. I recorded this is 2019 in the shed of Kenneth Nash in Branch, Newfoundland and is a solid forty-eight minutes like you’ve never heard before. I’ve identified 75 topics/areas of interest in the chat and will post these list of contents in the chat below. Incredible stuff and well worth a watch. Text: Michael Fortune | folklore.ie

This is brilliant... There are no magpies in Newfoundland so when the south east Irish settled there they brought over the superstition about seeing a lone magpies and lumped it onto the native black crow. So they have the exact same as us with the blessing etc but it's a crow they hate seeing. Here is Patricia Dohey telling me about it and there's a brilliant story of her friend going to buy a new car but when a lone crow landed on the one she was about to buy - she changed her mind and got a d

Denis Nash of Branch, Newfoundland. Here's something to cheer you up on a wet and grey October afternoon. It is a recording of 96 year Denis Nash singing The Glens of Aherlow for me in his home in Branch, Newfoundland back 2019. Denis has never stepped foot in Ireland and is one of many people in rural Newfoundland who are descended from men and women who went over from the south east of Ireland in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. These communities hung onto everything from Ireland; their

Irish and Hiberno-English words surviving on The Cape Shore in Newfoundland. Here’s a short video I made with Bride O’Rourke from Branch, Newfoundland after she’d pulled in to have a quick chat back in 2019. This was the first time meeting her and this particular chat was filmed on my phone as I leaned into her car. I’m sharing this as it contains some great words and pronunciations and straight from vernacular speech of Ireland. Some are Irish while more are old/middle English words/pronunciati

More good stuff from Newfoundland.... ......................................... A man called ‘Tramore’ - Jimmy Foley from Little Barasway, Newfoundland Sticking with the Irish Newfoundland content (which I have years of), here is a 9 minute chat I had with Robert McGrath on the side of the road in Gooseberry Cove back in June 2022. In this chat he talks about a man he knew growing up from Ireland called ‘Tramore’ - his real name was Jimmy Foley and was nicknamed Tramore as that is where he appar

Death Customs from rural Newfoundland - Chairs Turned Upside Down and The Lone Priest Here is some more folklore from one area of rural Newfoundland and this time it is centred around Death Customs and Beliefs. This is pure gold and it’s from an interview I did with Patricia Dohey back in 2019. The clip is much longer but I’ve edited two particular stories which grabbed me. The first is an account of chair being turned upside down at a wake so that the devil had nowhere to sit. I heard of versio

Robert McGrath, Patrick's Cove, Newfoundland - Holding Hands and Singing Etiquette Here’s another thing that transferred to Newfoundland from Ireland - the act of holding a singers hand when singing as a form of comfort, support and also keeping rhythm. I recorded this on the hop on my phone in May 2019 in the home of Robert McGrath with my eldest girl, Nellie. Towards the end of her singing him a song, he reached out and grabbed her hand. I’ve seen this at done at home here in Wexfod/Carlow and

Here's a lively one for you from the west coast of Newfoundland recorded in 1979. This clip features the legendary Émile Benoit along-with Joachim Benoit, Benjamin Benoit and Georges Chiasson while dancers are Geneviève and Charlie Chiasson. As you can guess by the names and tunes, there were also strong pockets of French settlement of the island, in particular on west coast. Mighty stuff. Come here, I wants you…. more from the Newfoundland archives. Here’s a tiny snippet from a recording I made with Denis, Kenneth and Annie Nash from Branch in Newfoundland back in May 2019 which highlights the many Irish and middle-English words and sayings from Ireland which are still in daily use there. For example they use the word ‘sprong’ for a fork, which to this day, you’ll will only find used in Wexford and the fringes of south Wicklow/south Carlow and south Kilkenny. Other words in this

Wren Boys (And Girls) from Newfoundland One of the great things about this internet lark is I can have a woman called Gloria White over in Riverhead in rural Newfoundland send me a few videos from her phone a few minutes after she filmed them. Here are two sets of Wren Boys (and girls) calling to her home earlier today and saying their little verse, getting a few dollars and leaving again. The first boys are Cameron and Ryan Whelan while the 2nd set are Ben and Sophie Costello and Taylor Butters
