When Chuck Jones was looking for a new character to pit against Porky Pig in 1947, he recalled one from a film directed by former colleague Bob Clampett, "Porky's Pooch" (1941). The simple premise, a homeless dog searching for a master and "selling himself" to anyone who would potentially give him a chance, appealed to Jones.
