It’s a Christmas miracle! Chicago’s Shedd Aquarium has announced that their very own zebra shark, named Bubbles, managed to fertilize eggs without mating. According to the announcement, Bubbles used her own genetic material to fertilize two of her eggs. Bubbles had these ‘virgin births’ in 2008, but the details of the process were only released this week. In 2008, scientists found that the shark’s offspring genetic makeup did not match any of the male sharks in the enclosure but matched Bubbles.
