The Western Maryland Scenic Railroad is a 16 mile line tourist line operating out of the historic town of Cumberland, Maryland. The railroad owns several pieces of vintage rail equipment, including two steam locomotives. Number 734 is a 2-8-0 “Consolidation” type originally built to haul iron ore trains for the Lake Superior and Ishpemming on the Great Lakes. Before locomotive 1309 became the main steam power for the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad, number 734 held down the runs from Cumberland to Frostburg.
